Crucifixion of Christ by Fra Angelico Puzzle in Tin
The Crucifixion, painting by Fra Angelico (Guido di Pietro), ca. 1420–23. On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 603.
This early work by Fra Angelico, likely made for private devotion, captures the emotional intensity of the Crucifixion of Christ. In the foreground, the Virgin collapses in grief, surrounded by Mary Magdalen and Mary of Cleofas in mourning. Behind them, Roman soldiers and their horses stand guard around the cross. Some figures focus their gaze on Christ, while others exchange glances. The circular composition, inspired by the bronze doors of Lorenzo Ghiberti, enhances the depth and narrative of the scene, reflecting Fra Angelico’s early mastery of space and human expression.
